What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is an holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia), muscles, tendons and nerves of the body.
The fascia, is the part of connective tissue that envelops, separates and influences every organ and tissue in the body.
Bowen Therapy balances the autonomic nervous system and helps to detox the body, it is effective for a wide range of mind and body conditions.
Sometimes called the homeopathy of bodywork, it utilizes subtle inputs to the body (known as moves), stimulating the body to heal itself.
Bowen Therapy derives it's name from the late Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916 - 1982), Geelong Australia. The Bowen technique is now taught and recognised throughout 30 countries worldwide.
The Bowen technique is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation and is safe to use on anyone, from newborns to the elderly and for any musculoskeletal or neuromuscular complaint.
Bowen Therapy treats the whole person and aims to treat the cause of problems, rather than the symptoms.
People often find improvement in other conditions that they had not first sort treatment for, what a bonus!
A Bowen treatment consists of sequences of small moves at varying pressures, each at a specific site on the body. The moves make changes, and address the tensional relationship between the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body.
Between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the body to begin responding. As the nervous system begins to adjust the tension level in the muscles, the practitioner senses when the client is ready for the next set of moves.
A typical Bowen session generally last from 15 to 60 minutes depending on the individuals presenting condition, and may be performed through light clothing if the client prefers.
Because of the subtle nature of the Bowen technique, and the body's continuing response to it over several days thereafter, other forms of manipulative therapy are discouraged for up to five days after a session, as they may interfere with the efficacy of the work. A little similar to trying to tune your radio into two stations!
Most clients report significant change with their presenting problem within 1 - 4 sessions, which makes Bowen Therapy an affordable choice of remedial therapy.
